A lot of people work out and wonder why they do not see progress. Whether your goal is aesthetics, strength, timed runs, or just feeling better, you might feel like you are doing everything you can. However, there may be many aspects you are overlooking.
Want to make progress? Here is the number one trick to succeeding: consistently taking the steps to get you to your goal.
What do I mean by this? It means:
- Eating the right foods in the correct amounts at every meal.
- Getting the proper amount of sleep.
- Drinking an adequate amount of water.
- Completing your workouts every week.
- Pushing yourself enough during your training sessions.
- Doing this over and over without “falling off the wagon.”
Consistency in Action: A Weight Loss Example
Let’s consider an example of someone trying to lose weight:
This person works out four times per week, preps most of their food for the week, and takes brisk 15-minute walks three times per week. They think they are doing everything right but are not seeing the results. Let’s find out where things might be going wrong.
Their maintenance calories are 2,100. If they ate that amount every day with the same workouts every week, they should maintain their weight. However, they do not track their calories accurately, guessing what they are putting into a fitness app. What they think is 4 oz of chicken is actually 8 oz, and 150 grams of rice is actually 300 grams. Additionally, they have an Iced Starbucks Blonde Vanilla Latte every workday (270 calories each), enjoy five beers on Friday nights (100 calories each), and consume bar food totaling around 500 calories, which they do not account for.
Adding up these missed calories throughout the week reveals an additional 2,670 calories. If they are in a 200-calorie deficit each day throughout the week (-1,400 calories), they are actually in a surplus due to the missed calories (2,670 – 1,400 = +1,270 surplus). This explains why they are not losing the weight they want; they are not consistently eating in a deficit.
